Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls was also on our agenda and we FLEW back to Maun and then to Victoria Falls. We had one night at the grand Victoria Falls Hotel. It is in the Victoria Falls National Park, a world heritage site. The Victoria Falls Hotel still evokes the gracious ambiance of an Edwardian style colonial era, and is only  ten minutes from the Falls. The ’smoke that thunders’ is clearly audible and visible from this landmark. I couldn’t resist a ‘High Tea” (all those cakes & silverware) on Stanley’s Terrace, which is a famous rendezvous spot and has a clear view of the Victoria Falls Bridge. I was fascinated by the mongoose which seemed to have a great time digging up the manicured lawn in various places, and no one seemed to mind?

Spray from Victoria Falls and the roar can be seen & heard for miles.

Victoria Falls “the smoke that thunders” the spray & roar of the Falls can be seen for miles

On the walk down to Victoria Falls we had to detour widely when a black Mamba snake was found  lying on the pathway. Victoria Falls, famed as the largest in the world with a width of 1708 meters and height of 108 meters, forming the largest sheet of falling water in the world. You can see the spray from the falls for miles. Before you even get close, you are  soaking wet from the spray. The thunderous roar of these mighty falls is quiet deafening, and the sight spectacular. We stood absolutely drenched, but enjoying this wonderful spectacle with the added beauty of a brilliantly colored rainbow. I believe Victoria Falls also has a ‘moonbow’, which can be seen in the spray over the falls on the night of a full moon.

Rainbow over Victoria Falls Africa

An African Travel Adventure. The magical rainbow over Victoria Falls

There is plenty to see and do in the town of Victoria Falls. We visited the Victoria Falls railway station (c1904) full of old world charm. Very convenient to the Victorian Falls Hotel, as you can virtually step from the train, through the station arch and stroll down the palm fringed walkway to the Victoria Falls Hotel.

In the center of town is an enormous craft market for cheap souvenirs and bargaining (I couldn’t resist some exquisite soapstone sculptures of African animals).  There are however, many upmarket shops with top class African art, huge and magnificent wood carvings, masks, shields etc. Victoria Falls is a very busy town and quite an experience .
